KIERAN AND I RAN BACK to the great hall as the cacophony of screams and shouts echoed in the halls of the Winter Castle. It felt like the ground shook underneath our feet but I couldn’t tell if it was the adrenaline running through my veins or an unnatural quake.

I heard Kieran whispering something beside me and without even looking at him, I knew what he’d done. Soon, the familiar scolding heat from Qai’s realm brushed my right cheek, the frightening sensation disappearing quickly as the portal vanished into thin air.

Qai started running beside us without questioning the abrupt calling he had received. His growl gave me courage.

We turned a final corner before reaching the huge double doors of the great hall. The door was closed but heat and smoke were coming off the sides. The hinges of the door shone with the heat they carried. The sounds that came from the other side made me feel like I was in the middle of a battleground. The only thing separating me from the bloodshed were those two wooden doors.

The hair on the back of my neck stood up.

“How?” Kieran mumbled as he rushed to grab the handle of the door. He flinched as his fingers wrapped around it. I heard the sound of flesh sizzling against heat as he immediately took his hand off the handle. I didn’t have to check it myself to know that it was scorching hot.

“Is it a fire?” He asked.

I didn’t want to talk about what was behind that door. We’d heard the screams, but saying it out loud would make it real.

“How will we get in?” I asked instead.

Qai growled beside me.

“You can do it?” Kieran asked him, desperation in his voice. “Do it!”

Qai took a few steps back and using the distance to add to his speed, he ran toward the doors. A loud crashing sound echoed in the hall as he hit it. He had to do it a few more times before the door broke free from its hinges and cracked. Qai ran toward it once again and this time the door splintered into a thousand pieces; revealing the horrible scene behind it.

Despite hearing the shout about the monsters being here as we ran back, I’d done my best to deny it. But now, I was seeing it with my own eyes.

The monsters were here.

The great hall was filled with them.

All around, fae ran and screamed. The always clean marble floors were smeared with blood that appeared to be left behind by fae dragged to be consumed. Children were crying as their parents grabbed and pulled them away from the reach of the monsters that attacked everyone in sight.

The fires had been caused by the torches being knocked off the walls, and although some parts of the great hall were burning brightly as flames engulfed tables and paintings, the fire was not the way they’d chosen to attack. It was just a consequence of monsters destroying everything in sight.

I couldn’t count
